Welcome Back

Welcome to the 2014 – 2015 school year! I have very excited to be working with you and your family this year. It will be an exciting year as we prepare for the future, master the skills needed to be successful in high school and college, and build relationships that will help us be better people.
This Thursday is Open House. Open House is an opportunity for students and families to drop off supplies, get a feel for the classroom, ask quick questions, and say hello to friends. The room will be open from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. If that time slot does not work for you, you are more than welcome to bring supplies on the first day of school.
Wednesday, September 3rd is the first day of school. Doors will open at 7:45 a.m. and students should be in their seats by 8:00 a.m. This weekend is a great time to review the uniform policy, get those white shirts out of storage, and take inventory of healthy items for lunches. Our uniform policy and healthy food policy can be found at http://cascadeheights.org/parents/school-policies-procedures.html.  The most troublesome items tend to be nail polish (none), skirt length (touching the knees), and shoes (only white, black, or brown). The healthy food policy applies to all snacks and lunches. We believe that healthy foods help students be their best and builds healthy bones and brains. That is why we ask that cookies, cakes, chips, fruit snacks, etc remain at home. Whole grains, fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and lean meats allow students to function optimally throughout the day. If you need ideas for healthy and easy to pack options please let me know! If your student is planning to have school lunch, you can deposit money in their account at http://www.nclack.k12.or.us/Page/1233 or send a check made out to NC12 with your student’s name on the memo line in an envelope.
Students should arrive at 7:45 a.m. with their supplies (if not dropped off on Thursday), lunch, snack, water bottle, and summer homework. Keep in mind that carline on the first day can take a few minutes longer than usual. If you’re planning to park, please make sure you park in a legal parking spot. We want everyone to have a safe and pleasant first morning.
Back to School Night will be held on Thursday, September 4th. I will be presenting information about our class content, policies, procedures, trips, fundraising, and I will have sign ups for conferences. Back to School Night is also our first fundraiser. We have been given permission to set up a concession stand for the evening. I need 2 student volunteers and at least 1 parent volunteer to man the table during the evening. If you are available, please let me know so we can start planning.
Again, I look forward to working with each of you this year. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me.

12th Night

There are many opportunities this summer and into the fall to see 12th Night by William Shakespeare. This is the play we will be performing in December, so it's an excellent chance for students to preview the storyline and get a feel for the characters!

Mr. Flickema gave me a heads up on these performances:
" My friend is the director for a theater company.  They are running a performance of 12th Night.  It's free admission and they are performing at several different vineyards, outdoors.  This is nice, because if there are other smaller kids in the party, a parent can take them for a walk if they become agitated.

August 1st - 3rd Stoller Vineyards - Dayton

August 8th - 10th Montinore Estate - Forest Grove
August 15th - 17th Ponzi Vineyards - Sherwood

Show Times:
Fridays and Saturdays at 7:00
Sundays at 6:00

If you go, find the director, Daniel Somerfield, and let him know that you're from CHPCS."

Great Deal

A friend of mine sent me this link after ordering it and thought it might be useful for my class, and I agree with her. I'm not endorsing any product, just passing on a way to save some money on school supplies!

Summer Shakespeare

Next fall we will be performing 12th Night by William Shakespeare. I highly encourage 8th grade families to attend as many Shakespeare performances as you can this summer. We are very fortunate to have 2 different troupes performing in the parks all summer long for free.

I have attended productions by both troupes and found them to be wonderful.

Welcome 2014 - 2015 8th Graders

Welcome to all the new 8th grade families! I am thrilled to be working with you and know that you're looking forward to a relaxing summer filled with adventures. I plan to do some camping, lots of hiking, and get my daughter ready to head off to Purdue.

During the last week of school, the summer homework was passed out. The homework involves the student choosing one of the activities below each day and completing it. When they have successfully completed it, they should ask an adult to sign it off. Part of what I'm hoping they will learn is how to plan ahead and manage their schedule. The coming years will require students to know how to look at their day/week and figure out how to make things happen. This is a perfect time to practice this skill. If your student lost their sheet, or wasn't here to get it, I have copied it below. Please note that I have left empty places in case there is something that does not fit your family, or if you have another brilliant idea!

Middle School Summer Homework

The MISSION of Cascade Heights Public Charter School is to inspire the social, emotional, academic, physical, personal, and ethical growth of children and partner with parents who share the same mission to prepare them to be members of a global society.

Students should choose one item to complete each day of the summer vacation. Items range in difficulty and time commitment, but are all designed to maintain the academic skills they gained during their year and prepare them for a successful transition to the next grade. Please feel free to email with ideas for alternative activities! There are 80 activities and only 60 days of vacation, so there’s plenty of flexibility and you’re welcome to come up with similar ideas that fit your family better. As students complete an activity, they will ask you to initial and date that box. This page is due on the first day of school.
