This week we have 4 very exciting events.
1st up is our trip to the Oregon Culinary Institute. We will be learning formal dining etiquette and enjoying a wonderful lunch. Attire for the day is formal. That means slacks, button up shirt, and tie or dressy skirt and blouse. Skirts must reach the knees and tights or pantyhose are appropriate. No bare shoulders please! Students obviously do not need to bring a lunch, but if possible a few dollars for a tip would be great. I have Mrs. Moutos, Mrs. McFarland, Mrs. Marshall, Mrs. Foos, and Mrs. Dodson down chaperoning this trip. If you said you were coming and I missed you, please let me know! Chaperones should arrive at 11:15 in formal attire. We will return to school no later than 2.
Our 2nd event of the week is Thursday's field trip. This one is to the Oregon Ballet Theater. Uniform of the day will be your dressiest uniform. I have Mrs. Marshall and Mrs. Foos down as chaperones. If you would like to attend, or already told me you'd like to attend and I misplaced the email, please let me know! We will leave school at 11 and return by 1:30.
Our 3rd event of the week is also on Thursday! Thursday at 2:30 is our version of American Bandstand. Meet us in the cafeteria for some great music from the 50's. Students have been practice dances, filmed news reports for some of the biggest events of the 50's, and there will be live performances from Elvis, The Tokens, and others! Parents are encouraged to dress up and be ready to dance. Even if you don't dance, you'll definitely want your camera. It's going to be fantastic.
Last but not least is our field trip to the Experience Music Project on Friday. Mr. Littledyke will be joining us to ensure we get everything possible out of our trip. All students will need to be at school in uniform at 6:45 AM. Yes really. Everyone will need to bring a hearty lunch and two hearty snacks. We will return to school at 7:00 PM. I have Mrs. Moutos, Mrs. Foos, and Mr. O'Reilly down as chaperones, which means I still have room for 4 more. Please let me know if you're crazy enough to join us. I promise it will be great.

Space Race Assessment Project
Today we finished the fourth part of the BBC documentary titled "Space Race". Students will now be creating a project to demonstrate their understanding.

February 27, 2018 at 8:00 AM
Format:
Any - Students may choose any medium or format for their presentation. They may make a video, build a model, collage, quilt, perform, etc. I want them to play to their strengths.
Team Size:
No more than two people may work together on a given project. Students are more than welcome to work alone.
Required Elements:
1. Topic must focus on one aspect of the space race. Possible topics include technology, media, personnel, conspiracy theories, budget, etc. If you're unsure if your topic is appropriate, ask!
2 .Must demonstrate deep understanding.
3. Presentation of the material should take 3 - 5 minutes.
4. Must demonstrate quality workmanship. (No duct tape)
Expected Time Commitment:
2 - 3 hours of research
2 - 4 hours of building/creating

50's Timeline Poster Project
This coming Thursday, the timeline posters are due. Each student was given a major event from the 50's and is to create a poster about that specific event. The poster must be 12" x 12" and should include the date, at least one picture, and the basic facts. We should be able to tell what the event was, when it occurred, who was involved, and how it impacted the future.

JOIN THE NEW HEALTHY COOKING CLUB AT WICHITA CENTER FOR FAMILY AND COMMUNITY
Developed in partnership with North Clackamas Schools Wichita Center, Metropolitan Family Service and Clackamas Service Center, the Healthy Cooking Club meets every Friday in February (02/14, 02/21 or 02/28) from 10:00am to 12:00pm at Wichita Center for Family and Community.

plan for meals using items from a food box, cook delicious and healthy meals and stretch a food budget.

Student Led Conferences
Student led conferences will be on February 21st. Student led conferences are an opportunity for your child to sit down with you and review their current progress and set goals. This typically takes approximately 20 minutes. I will then join you for about 10 minutes to share their report card and MAP scores. This is the time to celebrate your teen's success. This is the time to make goals to improve areas of concern. This is the time to receive MAP scores and your child's mid year progress report. This is the time to check in with the specialists about participation in those classes. It is not the time for in depth discussions with me. If you have concerns, I'm more than happy to schedule a separate time for us to sit down and talk through those. The classroom will open from 9:00 - 12:00 and 1:00 - 3:30.

Family Reading Night

You are invited to join the CHPCS community for a free night of literacy fun! Each classroom teacher will be reading a fabulous book and leading a fun project for child and adult pair to enjoy. Sessions will be filled on a first come, first served basis, so watch for the sign up sheet to come home soon. This night is NOT just for primary students. Middle school students are encouraged to attend. Please remember that every student needs an adult to work with them. The main objective of the night is to provide a fun literacy night for families to enjoy together. This year for the first time, the Battle of the Books final battle will be held the same night! After session 2, the two top scoring teams will battle it out for the trophy. Plan to stay and support your favorite students!
Cold War Timeline
As part of our Cold War unit, students are being asked to interview their parents or grandparents to find out what was happening in your life as the events in the US unfolded. This is a great opportunity to talk about how the dates in "history" line up with real people. For each year on the timeline, we're looking for major life events; births, deaths, graduations, immigration, marriages, etc.
Our timeline begins in 1947 and ends in the late 1970's. I would like at least 18 personal life events added.

The science fair is over for another year. I was very pleased overall with the quality of work and depth of knowledge demonstrated by the majority of 8th grade students.
Congratulations to Sierra, Megan, Gretel, and Shak who all placed in the top three of their categories.
There is only one last science fair assignment, which is to take the follow up survey so we can continue to improve the science fair experience.

February Field Trips
We have not one, not two, but THREE field trips this month.
The Winter program will explore how dance (and the audience’s experience) is impacted by dynamic variations of music—Silence to Big Sound! Students will see an excerpt of Almost Mozart—a work that was recently performed in Washington DC at the John F. Kennedy Center or the Performing Arts.
Regular uniforms will be worn on this day. Please be sure to send a sack lunch, as we will be getting back after the lunch room has quit serving.

With its roots in rock 'n' roll, EMP serves as a gateway museum, reaching multigenerational audiences through our collections, exhibitions, and educational programs, using interactive technologies to engage and empower our visitors. We will be travelling by bus to Seattle to visit the Experience Music Project. Mr. Littledyke, Mrs. Gausman, and the 3rd grade class will be joining us! We will be returning at 7:00 PM. Students will wear their regular uniform and will need to bring a healthy sack lunch and two hearty snacks.
